CVE-2026-24716: QNAP Operating System DoS Vulnerability

CVE-2026-24716 is a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in QNAP operating systems that enables authenticated attackers to launch denial-of-service attacks. This article covers technical details, affected versions, and patches.

Published: June 11, 2026

CVE-2026-24716 Overview

CVE-2026-24716 is a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability [CWE-476] affecting multiple QNAP operating system versions, including QTS and QuTS hero. An authenticated remote attacker with administrator privileges can exploit the flaw to trigger a denial-of-service (DoS) condition on affected devices. QNAP addressed the issue in fixed builds across all impacted product lines.

The vulnerability requires high privileges and does not lead to code execution or data disclosure. However, successful exploitation can interrupt service on storage appliances used in production environments.

Critical Impact

A remote attacker holding an administrator account can dereference a NULL pointer to crash affected QNAP NAS services, resulting in denial of service.

Affected Products

  • QNAP QTS prior to 5.2.9.3492 build 20260507
  • QNAP QuTS hero prior to h5.2.9.3499 build 20260514, and h5.3.4.3500 build 20260520
  • QNAP QuTS hero prior to h6.0.0.3459 build 20260409

Technical Details for CVE-2026-24716

Vulnerability Analysis

The vulnerability is a NULL pointer dereference [CWE-476] in QNAP operating system components. Code paths reachable to authenticated administrators access a pointer without verifying it references a valid memory object. When the pointer is NULL, the dereference triggers a fault that terminates the affected process or service.

The attack is network-reachable but constrained by the high-privilege requirement. The attacker must already possess valid administrator credentials before reaching the vulnerable code path. The flaw does not expose confidentiality or integrity, and its primary impact is service availability.

QNAP's advisory QSA-26-18 confirms the fix is delivered through firmware updates that introduce proper pointer validation before dereference.

Root Cause

The root cause is missing pointer validation in a privileged service handler exposed by QTS and QuTS hero. The code assumes a non-NULL return from an upstream call and operates on the pointer directly. Under conditions an authenticated administrator can induce, the call returns NULL, leading to a fault and process termination.

Attack Vector

Exploitation requires network access to the QNAP appliance and valid administrator credentials. After authenticating, the attacker submits a crafted request that drives execution into the vulnerable handler. The resulting NULL pointer dereference halts the targeted service, producing a denial of service. No public proof-of-concept exploit is available, and CISA has not added the issue to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

No verified public exploit code is available. See the QNAP Security Advisory QSA-26-18 for vendor-supplied details.

Detection Methods for CVE-2026-24716

Indicators of Compromise

  • Unexpected termination or restart of QNAP system services on appliances running vulnerable QTS or QuTS hero builds.
  • Repeated administrator-authenticated requests immediately preceding service crashes in QTS access logs.
  • Kernel or service fault entries in /var/log indicating segmentation faults in affected daemons.

Detection Strategies

  • Monitor administrative session activity for anomalous request patterns originating from unfamiliar source IP addresses.
  • Correlate authentication events with subsequent service availability disruptions across NAS fleets.
  • Alert on repeated administrator logins from geographies or networks that deviate from operational baselines.

Monitoring Recommendations

  • Forward QNAP system and authentication logs to a centralized SIEM for retention and correlation.
  • Track service uptime and crash counters for QTS and QuTS hero appliances using SNMP or vendor APIs.
  • Review administrator account inventory and disable unused or stale accounts that could be abused.

How to Mitigate CVE-2026-24716

Immediate Actions Required

  • Upgrade QTS to 5.2.9.3492 build 20260507 or later.
  • Upgrade QuTS hero to h5.2.9.3499 build 20260514, h5.3.4.3500 build 20260520, or h6.0.0.3459 build 20260409 or later, depending on the installed branch.
  • Restrict administrator interface access to trusted management networks only.
  • Enforce strong, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication on all administrator accounts.

Patch Information

QNAP released fixed builds for each affected branch as documented in the QNAP Security Advisory QSA-26-18. Apply updates through the QTS or QuTS hero administration console under Control Panel, System, Firmware Update, or download the firmware image directly from QNAP and apply it manually.

Workarounds

  • Limit network exposure of the QNAP management interface by placing devices behind a firewall or VPN.
  • Audit and reduce the number of accounts assigned administrator privileges.
  • Disable remote administrative access from the internet until firmware updates are applied.
