Why Quantum, Why Now
Innovation around compute continues making leaps forward: mainframes → PCs → cloud → AI, CPUs → GPUs → specialized accelerators. Quantum is the next discontinuity, less an incremental boost, more a new operating regime. Rather than performing operations linearly, one after another, quantum systems exploit superposition and entanglement to evaluate many possibilities at once, enabling step-function gains in simulation, optimization, and materials discovery.
Over the past year, we’ve been researching and executing on a cohesive thesis around quantum. Our investment in Infleqtion (leader in neutral atom based quantum compute and quantum sensing) reflects our belief that quantum has arrived along multiple vectors, sensing, timing, and compute in addition to others. Our investment in PsiQuantum expands that strategy into photonic-based, fault-tolerant quantum computing at data center scale.
Why We Invested in PsiQuantum
We back category defining teams across the AI and compute stack, from foundational models and evaluation to developer tooling, and quantum platforms. PsiQuantum extends that strategy, where early value will concentrate in integrated, full-stack providers delivering reliable, scalable capacity.
A photonic architecture built to scale, PsiQuantum uses photonic qubits, single photons as information carriers, fabricated on standard semiconductor processes. The team tackled some of the hardest problems first at the chip level, and has built an important foundation for quantum networking and AI supercomputing. We are very excited to be joining PsiQuantum’s $1B Series E alongside BlackRock, Temasek, NVentures (NVIDIA), and Counterpoint Global.
The company has been pursuing a first principles path to fault tolerance. PsiQuantum is architected for million qubit, error-corrected systems delivered as quantum data centers. The roadmap progresses from large scale prototypes to utility scale deployments, leveraging existing infrastructure, standard optical fiber for networking, and proven semiconductor manufacturing to reach fault tolerant logical qubit counts.
PsiQuantum’s photonics first path, manufactured in existing fabs, offers a credible route to a critical mass of logical qubits. The company’s focus on operating quantum data centers with runtime access and solution partnerships give customers a low friction on ramp, with no hardware to buy, maintain, or upgrade. From materials and energy to pharma and logistics, quantum will reshape high value workflows that classical compute strains to address, exactly the frontier where security, safety, and governance must be embedded early.
Why This Matters for Cybersecurity
New compute shifts the balance of power. As we’ve seen with AI, capability gains benefit both defenders and adversaries. Quantum accelerated search, simulation, and optimization will speed AI development and decisioning. That creates upside both for defenders, from better models, optimization and higher fidelity cyber simulations. But also raises the bar for necessary model security, management, and visibility across the stack.
Security must evolve over time with compute. As we help customers quantify and modernize AI, security and data controls, we also want to support the platforms that will define tomorrow’s threat surface, and tomorrow’s defensive toolkit.
